Don't put too much stake into gpts, especially Bard. I have asked it yes or no questions, and it will return both in the answer, something along the lines of yes so and so is true, no so and so is not true.

Language models like ChatGPT don't actually understand what you're saying, they are generating words based on context. So it's not like it understands your question, searches for an answer, and responds with factual correct information, it generates text that is likely to come after the question in the data it is trained on, which is usually some sort of answer.

They're essentially an autocorrect on steroids.

Congrats on your obvious success! You have surely earned it, literary fluff and all! Out of all the analysts out there, you are the only only one I support by paid subscription. I will continue to do so as long as I can.

I support him and the much denigrated Rolo, is all. There seems nothing better. Happy to hear about it if there is.

Man... You deserve it all... Keep up the good work and forget the peccadillos... who cares? It's what You write that cares... it's waiting your editorials to see what's going on and confirm that we readers are not alone and mad thinking differently from the sheeple...

It's not only the info You arrange that's important, it's having someone you can ask questions and a forum of fellow minded people... to confirm that you, me, all the others... we are not alone in the dark

Anyone who would put any writing and ask ChatGPT if it was likely written by ChatGPT is an absolute ignorant as to how it works. It's just a probabilistic token (single character/word) generator. If you ask it a question like this, a very very very high probability "valid" generation of tokens is for it to say "yes".

I've got a Plus subscription to ChatGPT, I use it almost every day. It's extremely useful, but within the very first 30mins to an hour of using it, I was getting it to produce logical fallacies if not outright contradictory impossibilities. It asserts falsehoods all the time. When you critique its output, it will pretend to understand what you are pointing out, apologise, then go on to make the same bullshit, until you sufficiently bully it in to giving you something correct, under extremely specific and terse terms. It didn't do it by understanding what you were saying, there is no actual "mind". It just got more and more inputs from you to generate an output more to your liking, and faked a back and forth of logical reasoning. I'm not even talking about biases necessarily, I'm saying that it's a complicated, scarily impressive bit of software who does a good job at faking it.

It's an ultra-elaborate mechanical 🦜, to put it another way, who can regurgitate bits of text it's hoovered up from the internet.

Yep, if you push it enough the algorithm begins to deteriorate and its output begins to fall apart.

I found it rather sad. Apparently I was looking for a reliable friend and didn't want to accept I'm merely interacting with a 'system of levers'.

But now I've gotten over my broken heart I use it frequently every day as the fastest way to get to things I want to know. Google type things. It out-googles google.

And a big thing I find it good at that I don't have the precise words to describe concerns formal studying. I study with a government body that I won't name, by correspondence: 'online courses' as we call them now.

They don't teach at all. They quite clearly are presented with a long list of 'core competencies' that have to be acquired to 'pass' this course. So in building that course they essentially do only two things:

1. They describe each of these things somewhere in their 'reading materials' or ad hoc associated links and downloads and references. This has covered their ass. They have now 'passed on' all that is required. (Actually often by law even. Like if teaching electricians it would be required to know the wiring code for a house).

2. They prepare 'assessments' which query your knowledge of these things.

Do you see? No teaching, no training and no review of the quality either.

So this is what gpt does for me: I get questions that are so poorly worded, so obscure that I just don't understand what they're asking. So i give the question to gpt. GPT always knows and gives a response that will suit. That I could deliver back to the institution and I don't doubt that many do.

I gain an insight and now know what the hell they meant. That process is the 'teaching' that between us GPT and I provide for me that their system does not.

The way I think of it GPT speaks 'bureaucratese'

and we're in a world governed entirely by bureaucrats.

So it helps us live and swim in those waters.

Which looks good at first sight. But not at second and third... and further...

Precisely. I use it as a "rich" search tool that actually gives me a general result that's informative, compared with the dumpster fire of Google search. SEO has made such a cursed landscape.

Yep. I haven't come up with the word or phrase that categorises what it is to me yet but it certainly is something. I lean on it quite a bit. It's a bit like the bloke at the next desk. Any little hassle or question I come up with I shout out and I generally get fairly useful answers.

I some perhaps 'quirky' uses out of it. Like I had a word doc watermarked by pdfxchange when it created it from a pdf. I pasted it into gpt and it pasted in without watermarks so I just copied it back out. job done.

I've had it make me a few little procedures to help my computing, too - batch file and php scripts I can't say I've used any of them yet so they might not work but it's hopeful.

Finding my way around my linux mint install it has been great. I say 'how do I do this' and it tells me. Where else am I going to find that out so quickly?

It is great.

But not perfect. Lots of little foibles and weaknesses and dangers.

But great. As an ex programmer I'm staggered at what they've done and I just can't imagine how they did it. 'Predictive algorithm' doesn't cut it to me. :)

I thought you're Son of HAL 9000 myself lol! In all seriousness, a hearty Congrats Mate to you for this important milestone. I just hate admitting that I'd only discovered The Saker a few months prior to Russia's SOM. Cheers Man and good luck I wish you continued success!

carry on,

excellent articles, foibles, nuances and all.

best overall appraisal about.

if i sense bias, it is for balance, not agenda.

i like your other site too, you are alive, good work.

I said to my son the other week.. "this dude (stt/dec91) is a collective, some greased wheel, too prolific... but well worth the read,.." ,

then two days ago i decided you were a Russki AI... ; ) seriously, in that moment.

we'll see ; ) haha

excellent writing style, whatever harsh self-criticism may be made.

just keep doing what you do amigo, outstanding,

can i get a job when you start a media channel, lol, whatever happened to old saltyshaker and leading north posters on bitchewed, they were excellent too.

i recall nightvision, sitrep especial. best posts on the SMO they were,

why'd you leave Saker, ; )

honest stuff Simplicius, genuine encouragement and questions.

Thanks amigo, yeah we miss saltshaker, hope he returns some day. As for Saker at the time I got very busy in my life plus there was a 'lull' in the SMO as I foresaw that Russia would have a fairly low period of not too much action so I figured reports weren't needed. But I came back early this year when I finally saw that things are going to heat up a lot

Congrats and if I may offer a tiny piece of advice (your call what you do with it obviously): DO NOT tell us who you are. There are many reasons for this and you touched upon it but another is it won’t increase your readership and might cutoff future income avenues.

There is nothing to gain (at least for now) but might be good in the future when the intrigue is too much to bear ;)

Oh, sorry but I forgot. I don't care who you are. I care about the well-reasoned and fact supported analysis. I could give a flying fuck if you were KGB. Or a 90 year old grandmother in Arkansas. We are so indoctrinated by Western propaganda that we forget that even if you were a enemy, that does not mean you are NOT right. I follow facts. Which is your work.
