I have to say I've been a freeloader to Simplicius for a long time, but the clarity of this analysis in the midst of all the current chaotic viewpoints being expressed was enough for me to say: this is the guy who sees through the fog best of all. Thank you Simplicius. I needed this one.

Rather glossed is the observation that the west never intended to create a jihadi Syria, just sufficient mayhem to suck in Russian boots on the ground and weaponry, but mainly boots on the ground. Iranian boots and weaponry too, although this is a lesser interest mainly of Israel's and Turkey's.

The idea was to overstretch Russia and bring it to the table over Ukraine. This western overkill, as the piece points out, guarantees the victory of an argument in Russia over how far Russia should go in Ukraine. The hardliners have been gifted a win. We have a lurid demonstration of what settling for anything less will mean for Russia down the line. No danger of that now. This is the one consequence I am sure the west did not intend along with its failure to foresee the extent of the jihadi victory.

Or maybe it did intend just this, having become anxious about the Ukrainian monster it has created, especially since Zelenskiiy went 'nuclear'.
