I think Simp and most commenters are wrong here, let me tell you why. All European NATO members have professional armies. Army duty contracts are limited in time, normaly 5 years that can be extended to 10. After that,.soldiers pass to a sort of active reserve but can be called any time. This means that even if the active staff is around 130k in an average big 5 European countries, the total number can and will soar to 500 k at short notice. That makes 2.5 M hands down. Add the US, contractors, the rest of the 27 NATO countries and some always handy yihaddy brigades as a topping cherry. This is no joke bro. As a final note, as told by active duty insiders, most soldiers are screaming to participate in NATO missions since they touch around € 6k a month, where as the regular salary barely overs 1k. Not to mention the legion of industrial and service subcontrating companies where money abundantly flows, with a lot of.army officers filling their pockets unaccounted. Army corruption is totally integrated and normal in NATO countries as they know they are impune to the slightest accountability. In short, all is set for a lets go...

NATO even includes civilian administrative personnel from member states in these exercises, as well as military personnel at the rear, in their own countries (logistics, etc.).
And on the contrary, you're wrong. Contracts start at 3 years. The operational reserve has an age limit. For example, in France, 33 years old in my time. At that point, if you had left a year earlier, you could no longer re-enlist. Professional armies compared to whom, what? Tibetan monks?

It's fairly easy to see that when you look at extreme cases. Some people really are so totally vicious, so completely evil, so indisputably dangerous to everyone around them that expending resources on keeping them a live is a crime against every decent person who might be saved or assisted with those resources. The right thing is to kill them.
Some other people are so totally poisonous that if you really seek to keep as many people alive and safe from harm as possible, the only rational thing to do is to eliminate those poisonous people, because if you do not they will work their evil and many people, possibly millions of people will die. In reality, the really vicious, poisoned people are not so few in number. There are very, very many of them and when they get an opportunity they love to work their evil. Thousands of them flocked to Nazi-held Ukraine to sign up to torture and kill people in the conflict. They did that in Kursk, torturing and killing old people. I do have a philosophical problem with reparations. It was my good fortune as a 19-year old college freshman(1970) to have a history prof who'd been in the SDS on the East Coast. Lets say you were forced to choose one of several feudal lords striving to implement social control in 15 minute cities, would you, for instance, choose one ultimately driven by the Talmud or one driven by Confucianism? I would prefer the (at least illusion of) freedom we had in the west in the 90:s, but since that is not coming back, I would choose a feudal lord who didn't try to tell me my son is actually my daughter and who would allow me to retain some cultural heritage and identity. The only reason Ukraine is able to do so to the extent it has been doing is because the entirety of Ukraine's economic activity is subsidized by Europe. Ukraine does not need its people to organically sustain its economy, and a state that does not need its people can freely throw them into a meat grinder until there is nobody left.
On the other hand, Europe needs its people because there is no back stop. Nobody is going to subsidize Europe the way Europe has been subsidizing Ukraine. Europe will therefore be constrained to fight with their limited class of military professionals and second rate reservists. If they attempt anything along the lines of what Ukraine is doing, the EU will collapse overnight.

That's the thing, there was never any clear end game.
I have been explaining this for a long time, but nobody wants to listen. But it's not that complicated:
1) The Kremlin represents Russian elites, not Russia the country. The Russian government is the board of directors of Russia Inc. the shareholders are the Russian oligarchy, the country and its people are there to generate profits, other than that nobody who matters places much to value to them.
2) The arrangement established by Gorbachev and Yeltsin was that Russia will be a resource appendage to the West with the Russian oligarchy getting its cut of the loot in exchange for managing the territory.
3) But then the West reneged on that arrangement (surprise, surprise) and decided to reduce the size of that cut. Which forced the Kremlin to act belatedly, but insufficiently. Thus Putin's Munich speech, the Crimea annexation, and eventually the SMO.
4) However, nobody has questioned the nature of the arrangement, just the parameters. And that is extremely, extremely important to understand. The Russian oligarchy exists based on that arrangement, and they destroyed the country once already in order to set it up. They would gladly do it again if it meant maintaining their status. Thus the SMO was a bluff, not a real war fought for victory. And, as you have been watching this shit show for four years now, indeed nobody ever fought it with victory as the goal. I don't see how anyone looking at the situation objectively can deny that.
5) Victory is not only not the goal, it is actively harmful to the Russian oligarchy. Because in order to achieve victory, an internal reorganization of society that reduces their power is an absolute must (even in the US the WWII mobilization effort had such an effect automatically -- suddenly the government started calling the shots and the inverts the desirable for the oligarchy power relation), then Ukraine would have to be supported and reconstructed, and that would mean taking from the oligarchs (as the only major untapped pool of resources), and finally, it would mean a return to Soviet-type technological autarky, which would necessitate reindustrialization. This part people have really hard time grasping -- reindustrialization and autarky by default hurts both the banking and the resource extraction oligarchs, by generating an alternative center of power, redirecting resources internally, and severing ties with the West, thus eliminating the position of the middlemen on which their power is based.
So for all those reasons the Kremlin never pursued victory, and still doesn't, desperately looking for some kind of a shitty deal that will kick the can down the road once (as happened so many times in the past).
You can imagine how much (some of) the generals are seething, but they apparently don't have the power to force a real shift in policy. Some of them are corrupt and part of the oligarchy too -- you saw how many were arrested for embezzlement of huge sums. But not all of them. Go back to Kirilov's murder -- how did that happen? He was blown up right in front of the entrance of his apartment building. Which was a random nondescript Brezhnevka somewhere in Moscow, i.e. he was living the way Soviet generals did, as part of the general population with very little in terms of personal wealth and comforts.
So you have that type of person there that isn't in it for the money. And the General Staff was strong enough to prevent total surrender on multiple occasions in the past, but is clearly not strong enough to do more than that. Putin himself looks to be a weak man trapped in the middle of it all, refusing to take a side and fight for it, with no clear idea how to move forward.
And this is how we arrive at Tomahawks about to be fired into Russia after three years of the country being bombed with increasing intensity (instead of the Donbass becoming as secure as the mainland, the mainland turned into a giant Donbass), and Russia looking likely to just take it instead of fighting back...

When that blew up, the kremlin has coped from one day to the next, stating "terms" and making threats, assuming that the other side is still at the table and just being intransigent. I think Simp and most commenters are wrong here, let me tell you why. All European NATO members have professional armies. Army duty contracts are limited in time, normaly 5 years that can be extended to 10. After that,.soldiers pass to a sort of active reserve but can be called any time. This means that even if the active staff is around 130k in an average big 5 European countries, the total number can and will soar to 500 k at short notice. That makes 2.5 M hands down. Add the US, contractors, the rest of the 27 NATO countries and some always handy yihaddy brigades as a topping cherry. This is no joke bro. As a final note, as told by active duty insiders, most soldiers are screaming to participate in NATO missions since they touch around € 6k a month, where as the regular salary barely overs 1k. Not to mention the legion of industrial and service subcontrating companies where money abundantly flows, with a lot of.army officers filling their pockets unaccounted. Army corruption is totally integrated and normal in NATO countries as they know they are impune to the slightest accountability. In short, all is set for a lets go...

In reality, the really vicious, poisoned people are not so few in number. There are very, very many of them and when they get an opportunity they love to work their evil. There's no doubt in my mind that Europe will be at war with Russia suddenly sooner than anyone thinks. One could imply that this war has already started due to US proxy NATO's direct participation in the Ukraine conflict through mercenaries, intelligence, starlink and weapons. And, if that it the case, Russia must cancel the SMO, and prepare for a greater war by taking out Ukraine from the field of battle.

Europeans cannot replicate the Ukrainian strategy of pressganging men into service. The only reason Ukraine is able to do so to the extent it has been doing is because the entirety of Ukraine's economic activity is subsidized by Europe. Ukraine does not need its people to organically sustain its economy, and a state that does not need its people can freely throw them into a meat grinder until there is nobody left.
On the other hand, Europe needs its people because there is no back stop. Nobody is going to subsidize Europe the way Europe has been subsidizing Ukraine. Europe will therefore be constrained to fight with their limited class of military professionals and second rate reservists. If they attempt anything along the lines of what Ukraine is doing, the EU will collapse overnight.

My belief is that Russia has gamed out all the possible outcomes, including ones where western leaders, individually or collectively, make completely irrational moves. That's the thing, there was never any clear end game.
I have been explaining this for a long time, but nobody wants to listen. But it's not that complicated:
1) The Kremlin represents Russian elites, not Russia the country. The Russian government is the board of directors of Russia Inc. the shareholders are the Russian oligarchy, the country and its people are there to generate profits, other than that nobody who matters places much to value to them.
2) The arrangement established by Gorbachev and Yeltsin was that Russia will be a resource appendage to the West with the Russian oligarchy getting its cut of the loot in exchange for managing the territory.
3) But then the West reneged on that arrangement (surprise, surprise) and decided to reduce the size of that cut. Which forced the Kremlin to act belatedly, but insufficiently. Thus Putin's Munich speech, the Crimea annexation, and eventually the SMO.
4) However, nobody has questioned the nature of the arrangement, just the parameters. And that is extremely, extremely important to understand. The Russian oligarchy exists based on that arrangement, and they destroyed the country once already in order to set it up. They would gladly do it again if it meant maintaining their status. Thus the SMO was a bluff, not a real war fought for victory. And, as you have been watching this shit show for four years now, indeed nobody ever fought it with victory as the goal. I don't see how anyone looking at the situation objectively can deny that.
5) Victory is not only not the goal, it is actively harmful to the Russian oligarchy. Because in order to achieve victory, an internal reorganization of society that reduces their power is an absolute must (even in the US the WWII mobilization effort had such an effect automatically -- suddenly the government started calling the shots and the inverts the desirable for the oligarchy power relation), then Ukraine would have to be supported and reconstructed, and that would mean taking from the oligarchs (as the only major untapped pool of resources), and finally, it would mean a return to Soviet-type technological autarky, which would necessitate reindustrialization. This part people have really hard time grasping -- reindustrialization and autarky by default hurts both the banking and the resource extraction oligarchs, by generating an alternative center of power, redirecting resources internally, and severing ties with the West, thus eliminating the position of the middlemen on which their power is based.
So for all those reasons the Kremlin never pursued victory, and still doesn't, desperately looking for some kind of a shitty deal that will kick the can down the road once (as happened so many times in the past).
You can imagine how much (some of) the generals are seething, but they apparently don't have the power to force a real shift in policy. Some of them are corrupt and part of the oligarchy too -- you saw how many were arrested for embezzlement of huge sums. But not all of them. Go back to Kirilov's murder -- how did that happen? He was blown up right in front of the entrance of his apartment building. Which was a random nondescript Brezhnevka somewhere in Moscow, i.e. he was living the way Soviet generals did, as part of the general population with very little in terms of personal wealth and comforts.
So you have that type of person there that isn't in it for the money. And the General Staff was strong enough to prevent total surrender on multiple occasions in the past, but is clearly not strong enough to do more than that. Putin himself looks to be a weak man trapped in the middle of it all, refusing to take a side and fight for it, with no clear idea how to move forward.
And this is how we arrive at Tomahawks about to be fired into Russia after three years of the country being bombed with increasing intensity (instead of the Donbass becoming as secure as the mainland, the mainland turned into a giant Donbass), and Russia looking likely to just take it instead of fighting back...
