At this point in time I believe that there will not be a real settlement in the foreseeable future. The Trump/NATO/EU team is simply playing a game, they are looking at Ukraine as the ultimate foothold against Russia and they will not give up. Even if they arrive to some sort of deal where the guns will fall silent for a while, a hundred little backdoors will be left open to fan the flames of this war again. The main goal of the diplomatic game they are playing is only for a public display of their ‘goodwill’. Putin has no choice but to go along for relaxing public opinions on his own side. He understands the game hence the slow careful movements of the Russian armed forces.
It's actually a very nuanced way Russia is following. They did not start this and at every step of the way they offered a face saving exit for NATO, combined with reasonable demands for Russian sovereignty.

4) The US removes all nuclear weapons from Eurasia
5) No European country (or Japan and South Korea) is allowed to remilitarize, or god forbid, gets any ideas of acquiring nuclear weapons, under threat of immediate erasure from the map the moment information about such nascent developments arrives.

I don't know why the Russians continue to engage in negotiations with the Trump administration.
There are many possible answers:
1. Putin is ready to surrender important Russian interests, although he could very easily win by allowing the generals a different approach to war. This is because of his traitorous nature and love of the West.
2. Putin is ready to stop the SMO because Russia is suffering enormous casualties, advancing very slowly and her economy is about to get out of control.
3. Putin is trying to sow discord among the USA and some European governments, letting them negotiate the final draft agreement to be proposed to Russia, which will be anyway rejected. Meanwhile the Russian army continues to advance.
4. Some other cause, which escapes my imagination.
My money is on point 3, but I don't know everything as you apparently think of yourself.
The issue with this idea is it may happen if you neglect the economic factors involved in the conflict. Europe will only experience a greater economic and financial decline without Russian energy, commodities and markets. The US financial crisis will merely worsen as the worlds biggest commodities and energy exporter coupled with the world's biggest importer and exporter shift away from the dollar as a global reserve trading currency and debt as a global reserve asset. Borrowing can only continue if there are borrowers or debt will become meaningless and worthless. Then there are the Ukrainians who eventually will realize they were duped and dumped.
And at some point Ukraine will have to admit that it no longer has the ability to fight and will be forced to surrender - unconditionally - at which point Russia will determine Ukraine's future, not the West.
Reserves are not held in dollars they are mostly held in debt based assets. The bigger shift is Russia's inability to transact in dollars as being cut away from SWIFT they are unable to receive large payment in dollars. So in essence the Russians did not shift away from dollars they were forced away.
Actually, that is not true. A country holds foreign exchange assets as a liquid deterrence against monetary instability and the ability to pay off foreign currency based debts. These FX assets can be in the form of liquid assets such as cash, precious metals, government bonds, etc. Cash in the form of US Dollars has been the most common in recent history as it has been the world's reserve currency. Russia had loads of US dollars but has deliberately reduced those to virtually nothing by buying gold and other liquid assets in recent years as they shift away from US dollar-based debts due both to sanctions and the objective of working with other nations (primarily China) to replace the dollar as the reserve currency.
Whilst you might say they were forced away from the dollar, that is only partially true as long before they were sanctioned from SWIFT they early saw that the US was transforming the dollar to a weapon of coercion and began working on a means of freeing themselves from it and reducing their risk of holding them.

I think the level of compliance would be way down, even among people who fell in line the last time around. There has been a LOT of water under the bridge since then as far as more and more of the public waking up to the damage that was done, not just to people's physical and mental health but to their financial security. I've been thinking for some time that they overplayed their hand, got too cocky, revealed too much and there's just no putting that genie back into the bottle as people's trust in institutions, in governments, in scientists and "experts" and in media has tanked.
I found myself re-evaluating what I had long considered my own settled opinions on a number of subjects and discovered in talking to friends that they have done the same. We're not in Kansas anymore and in the above sense that's a good thing IMO.
I agree with your observations about damage done to the whole culture, but I look around and see so many people who are programmed or simply oblivious to what seems obvious to me. I would agree that things are at that "suddenly all at once" stage.

I agree with much of what you said. Too many people are oblivious still, not just about this but about everything beyond their immediate lives. I have a friend who took the shot when it first came out but didn't take any boosters because none of them were required for her job. Last fall she was talking about getting a booster and I earnestly urged her to do some research before deciding. I didn't hold out much hope that she did because she never does and I never asked because I can't worry about her if she can't be bothered to worry about herself. The one "positive" thing this time around is that she hates Republicans and especially Trump and may resist on those grounds alone.
I think younger people are our hope, they're a lot more aware and skeptical and rightly PO'd, as their aspirations for decent future prospects have turned to ash.

Food production today depends on farm machinery, fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc - all highly dependent on masses of workers in industries that in turn rely on energy sources, manufacturing, foundries, mining, transport, etc. Modern civilisation with all its amenities requires an appropriate population base to support it. While Russia is indeed gifted with natural resources and an intelligent, hard-working population, they are the only country that can actually survive if needed cut off from the world. They depend on these countries for adequate supplies of such products as machinery and equipment, vehicles and vehicle parts, pharmaceuticals, chemical products, metals, electronic and electrical equipment, textiles, clothing, plastics, and rubber items to maintain their growing standard of living and quality of life. They also depend heavily on others for many items like IT components, machinery parts like valves and pipes, iron and steel, and medicines. While they could produce many of these products themselves, they can only do so with an adequate population which they do not currently enjoy (part of the reason they have a labour shortage and suffer a bit of inflation), so must depend on others to fill their needs. So yes, while Russia is capable of self-sufficiency at some level of survival, they depend on the rest of the world.
As for the Southern States, they were never 'self supporting' as they depended heavily on products from Europe and the industrial Northern states to sustain their lifestyles. They had a very limited industrial base and a largely uneducated population ruled by a relative small cadre of elite landowners. I suspect if you look into the results offered up by those social 'scientists' (there is actually no such 'science'), you would find that they meant that the South could have survived as a society by remaining an agricultural nation depending on a foreign industrial base for the remainder of its needs.
In short, high levels of technology require loads of people, and loads of people require high levels of technology.
I believe our elites are not stupid. They well know all this. I think the level of compliance would be way down, even among people who fell in line the last time around. There has been a LOT of water under the bridge since then as far as more and more of the public waking up to the damage that was done, not just to people's physical and mental health but to their financial security. I've been thinking for some time that they overplayed their hand, got too cocky, revealed too much and there's just no putting that genie back into the bottle as people's trust in institutions, in governments, in scientists and "experts" and in media has tanked.
I found myself re-evaluating what I had long considered my own settled opinions on a number of subjects and discovered in talking to friends that they have done the same. We're not in Kansas anymore and in the above sense that's a good thing IMO.

I agree with much of what you said. Too many people are oblivious still, not just about this but about everything beyond their immediate lives. I have a friend who took the shot when it first came out but didn't take any boosters because none of them were required for her job. Last fall she was talking about getting a booster and I earnestly urged her to do some research before deciding. I didn't hold out much hope that she did because she never does and I never asked because I can't worry about her if she can't be bothered to worry about herself. The one "positive" thing this time around is that she hates Republicans and especially Trump and may resist on those grounds alone.
I think younger people are our hope, they're a lot more aware and skeptical and rightly PO'd, as their aspirations for decent future prospects have turned to ash.

While they could produce many of these products themselves, they can only do so with an adequate population which they do not currently enjoy (part of the reason they have a labour shortage and suffer a bit of inflation), so must depend on others to fill their needs. So yes, while Russia is capable of self-sufficiency at some level of survival, they depend on the rest of the world.
As for the Southern States, they were never 'self supporting' as they depended heavily on products from Europe and the industrial Northern states to sustain their lifestyles. They had a very limited industrial base and a largely uneducated population ruled by a relative small cadre of elite landowners. I suspect if you look into the results offered up by those social 'scientists' (there is actually no such 'science'), you would find that they meant that the South could have survived as a society by remaining an agricultural nation depending on a foreign industrial base for the remainder of its needs.
In short, high levels of technology require loads of people, and loads of people require high levels of technology.

A NATO-Russia war will not feature any armies until the moment the opponent is defeated and the victor has to move in to occupy the ruins, at which point you don't necessarily need massive WWII-level armies.

This is the West negotaiating with itself, driven by internal rivalries and agendas, many of which have nothing to do with the war per se. And even if the West could arrive at an agreed starting position for discussion, any actual negotiated agreement would need to be diluted from there and thus be branded as "surrender" and be a political poison pill - though a failure to achieve such an outcome will lead to the "Fall of Saigon" moment apparently feared by Team Trump. And the Russians regard the West as agreement incapable anyway - this is not a play for peace but a breathing space to prepare the UAF for round 2 in a few years.
Russia needs to keep its allies on side and indeed a proper negotiated settlement might be worth having. But looks to me like this will end when the UAF collapses. Team Trump will try to spin this as we did all we could to find peace but the Ukrainians insisted on fighting on. So the USA will continue to sell weapons (to itself) and provide support. Meanwhile Europe will continue to fall further into a deeper economic and political malaise, made worse by millions of new Ukrainian refugees. Maybe Project Ukraine was not such a good idea after all?

Russians simply want a deal because the war is not even about Ukraine that much. When Ukraine falls, the problem won't resolve itself as if by miracle.

And thus the only way to do that is to land lock Ukraine and create large buffer zones between Russia's new territories and what's left of Ukraine. When this happens, the remaining nazis in western Ukraine can no longer be armed like they were before, plus USA / EU's interest in Ukraine will vanish very quickly and no more support will go to Ukraine, like they do with any of their proxies, discarded like trash. Ukraine will be in infinite limbo on "joining the EU", much like Turkey, because Ukraine has no more use for the west.
