Zelensky is playing theatre before NATO summit in Turkey in 2 weeks, for his regular begging spree. That's only what he can do in face of huge losses in Donetsk.

However, Ukraine has some stock of experimental Rusty Dagger missiles from the USA newest production. So far 3 were used on Voronezh electronic chip factory blown at daytime, killing 5 workers and seriously injuring many civilians in nearby homes and streets.

Those remaining Daggers will be used within days on Sevastopol sprawling resort town and maritime base on Crimea, to create not only theatre, but cause real mayhem on civilians. Those Daggers can't be detected yet by Russian air defence system - it takes up to 6 weeks to calibrate radars to profile of each particular missile type. Because they are being fired from a close range there is no much time to switch on air raid sirens to move people to shelters. They are not very precise ones, but are 10x cheaper to make than JASSM, so they have to be used in groups - firing them on populated areas inevitably causes damage to civilian infrastructure and collateral murder. That happen and it would make Russia enter proper war, with Duma passing war laws.

It's summer holiday season in Russia and Crimea is the prime destination for it's climate and tourist infrastructure. There are very limited active military installations left, as the Black Sea flotilla relocated from there in 2022. But that's exactly what Ukraine wants, a terror war. Zelensky's the next target is the whole Crimea. He said everything was already planned in detail at G-7 Summit in Paris a week ago and awaiting for NATO approval and more missiles for that very purpose.

"Zelenskyy: Our operation in Crimea has been carefully planned and Ukraine is counting on its partners"

https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2026/06/24/8040972/index.amp

Those Daggers arrived to Ukraine at the beginning of June and were detected promptly. Probably some of them were already destroyed by Russian Kinzhals within the last week. But some are left and more are on it's way.

Victor's avatar

Very unlikely Russia will "enter proper war" as a result of a few missiles raining down on Sevastopol. Russia will retaliate by other means.

Jeannie's avatar

The provocations are to manipulate Russia into attacking, so they can sell the propaganda to the masses to support a war on Russia.

The Russians are not letting the West dictate actions and reactions, and that is very frustrating to say the least! The longer Russia holds out doing what they want, the lower the West falls.

werner hillinger's avatar

Agree. The Russians will not divert energy from the front lines, where the war is won or lost.

Chip Worley's avatar

Wars are not simply won on the front line. They are won by logistics or the lack thereof. Stop shit from getting to the front line and you win the front line battles. I was a military planner, not an arm chair warrior... Chip

werner hillinger's avatar

Amateurs talk about strategies and tactics, professionals talk about logistics. When in military service I was in logistics too.

Michael Lynch's avatar

WW2 was won and lost through logistics, nothing else mattered without logistics.

Chip Worley's avatar

The idea that Russia can't see where these are coming in is bullshit IMO. If coming in from border crossing from Poland, blow the fuck out of it!! This is starting to make less and less sense to me each day... Chip

The Spectre's avatar

There is a distance 600 km from Russia to Polish border.

So it's impossible to hit a moving target on a motorway's civilian traffic from that far. Far too big risk hitting buses etc.

Military cargo is not transported on military trucks in a convoy, but on small unmarked cargo vans, including Ukrainian Post Office, delivery companies.

Rusty Dagger is just 250 kg and 270 cm. It can fit in most vans and doesn't need special equipment, ramps, cranes to off load. It can be done by hand in any conditions.

They can be destroyed when stationary at warehouses closer to Russian borders.

If war escalates to Belarus, it would be possible to cut supply routes from Poland.

Chip Worley's avatar

I was an engineer and military planner. You don't target a moving object, you shut down the entire avenue of approach. You make that border crossing and that highway IMPASSIBLE and thereby cutting off that lifeline to the Ukrainian army. If the Uki's repair it, you do it again. It's a simple concept that I know from experience that the Russians well understand. So why the hell aren't they doing it????? Chip

The Spectre's avatar

There are hundred roads (not all are legal border crossings, but can be used by small cargo vans) plus many railway lines in over 1000 km border from NATO countries to Ukraine, plus ships moving to Odessa and Romanian sea ports.

Any road can be repaired within a day or two or bypass damage by many other routes.

Chip Worley's avatar

Again, as a military planner you evaluate the overall terrain. You look at avenues of approach that might be even 25 km wide. You plan obstacles including mines, blown bridges, cratered roads, etc... to deny the enemy access to that approach. It can all be done if there is the will to do so. This isn't an armchair opinion... Chip

Will Catchum's avatar

Ok name a war you successfully planned.

westminster18's avatar

Those places are too far away. You would need tens of thousands of very expensive missiles to destroy all the roads and keep them closed.

Chip Worley's avatar

Negative. You identify choke points. Highway through a cut hillside or heavily forested or impassible terrain on each side for example. Bridges over river or ravine where bypass is not possible. You create the obstacles "in depth" in these narrow choke points and you observe by satellite if anyone is attempting bypass or repair. And then you hit them again any time they are attempting repair. No a few dozen missiles, perhaps "behind the line" Spetsnaz demolition crews, etc... to do the initial obstacles. Then "cover by fire" by observing them as described above which would not take "thousands" of missiles as you describe. Unfortunately I can't boil down decades of training and experience in this in a simple post but I've given you enough info you should be able to visualize what I mean... Chip

The Spectre's avatar

Western Ukraine is very much developed - there are very many roads, bridges. Flat terrain with wast agricultural fields.

It's far away from Syberia's impassable rivers, mountains.

westminster18's avatar

dude, the Red Army was supplying the tiny sliver of land they held in Stalingrad in the middle of winter, across freezing Volga, while being constantly bombarded with artillery and planes. Western Ukraine is vast and hundreds of kilometers from Russian lines. The US doesn't have the capability to do this, let alone Russia. The best you can do is complicate things a bit at great cost to long range systems. The best Russia can try to do is take out all the bridges over the Dnieper. They are much closer and static targets. Even then though, hundreds of pontoons and ferries would keep supplying the front.

Will Catchum's avatar

Yea, an engineer and planner in a military that hasn't won on the battlefield in over a century. A military that had their ass handed to them by stone aged goat herders with 1940s tech. Pardon me for being extremely unimpressed.

Archie1954's avatar

Interesting! Ukraine wants Crimea back and is quite willing to destroy it to do so!

The Spectre's avatar

No, for already 3 years they don't have any ambitions to Crimea. After they lost their offensive in summer 2023 against Surovikin defence line.

That's why their next offensive was in Kursk in summer 2024, across border on Russian ethnic territories, punch on nose. That offensive was instigated and conducted by mercenaries.

The purpose of a planned attacks on Crimea is not territorial gain at all, but terror on civilians. High tourist concentration in resorts, boulevards by sea, open street restaurants, coffee shops, festivities on beaches.

Those vacationers are not only Moscovites or Peterburgans, but from all over Russia. These includes children and sports camps.

Zelensky himself and Ukrainian elites have lost large real estate investments on beach fronts, after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Those properties were confiscated for state property after 2022 war broke out.

Zelensky had at least 3 luxury multi million apartments on his own name, but likely many more on his family members and associates.

They are paying to Russia with missiles, for what they can't ever get back.

Archie1954's avatar

Very interesting!

Mark Watson's avatar

Spectre,

Don't worry they now own massive expensive real estate in Europe and the USA . The business of corruption is very lucrative...

Archie1954's avatar

So Zelensky is asking NATO for help in killing Ukraine's own people in the Crimea, the area it tells the World is its. He is an obnoxious and wicked man!

The Spectre's avatar

Tatars are not Ukrainians.

They are also Sunni Muslims. Thy are Turkic speaking, no Slavs.

Krushchev, being Ukrainian himself, gave Crimea to Ukrainian Republic in 1954. Before that it was in Russian Republic.

During 2 WW, in 1944, Stalin moved 200 000 Tatars in mass to Siberia, Ural, Uzbekistan, as he was afraid of their uprising. They were allowed to move back to Crimea after his death.

By that time Crimea was Russian ethnic, and still is. It's harmonious society, despite different languages, religions and culture.

_elensky can bomb the belarussian towers Putin cannot bomb the starlink ground stations

The principle, though, is the same in each case; Zelensky is a hypocrite for demanding that Russia not use Belorussian cell networks, whilst simultaneously using US satellite channels.

Mark Watson's avatar

Blissex,

The ground stations for starlink create signals that can be detected . It's harder to detect and target signals for missiles and drones on the move . Just sayin...

That Guy,

The media saturation by the west is mainly for domestic audiences . The Russians seem to be largely ignoring it apart from the commentariat . Its noticeable that a lot of the commentary is on western owned media and communication networks . From what I see Russia is looking to bring the information space back in house as the Chinese have been doing . I would posit that both sides of the conflict are using coded messaging on social media to get information through to and from their intelligence assets .

Observer987654's avatar

lol, it clearly does!

What if 'The Russian MOD has never really bothered to craft such “information campaigns”' is the psy-op? It's not like we'd know or could (casually) tell since 'truth is always the first casualty in war!'

it doesn't take a lot to put a spin on things, but to say that 'the russians wold never do that, have no time for it,' etc, that's just lazy/funny man.

All major cities south of Kyiv feature the same type of defenses, including roadblocks. Since tank-column attacks are no longer occurring, I share—though do not merely echo—the view held by some that these defenses are intended for the resident population; they are essentially "meat traps." One must view this as a cattle pen that facilitates the work of the TCC.

GM's avatar

>And for those skeptical: why would Russia have any moral, ethical, or legal qualms against doing so now if it happily launched an offensive from Belarus just four years earlier in 2022?

Because in 2022 Ukraine had no means to strike back while after four years of "demilitarization" now it uses three times as much long-range firepower than Russia every day.

Thus Lukashenko wants no part of this, and rightfully so.

Hussein Hopper's avatar

GM is on the Bali Gold again on the frontline in Kuta beach and applying the tried and true Zelensky method for counting casualties to Russian and Ukrainian “firepower”. Must have hit his head on beach debris falling off the banana lounge.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Exactly. Luka will not allow any Russian offensives from Belorussia.

He can take some punches from Ukraine by himself but as soon as Ukraine starts to demolish infrastucture the calculus will change.

Victor's avatar

Like he didn't allow it in Feb 2022?

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Explained it in another comment.

GM's avatar

It's a dramatically different situation now that Ukraine has been pumped up with so much long-range weaponry.

The window of opportunity was missed. Once again.

Tim's avatar

As we are now coming to recognize belatedly, GM should have been advising the Kremlin from the beginning.

Had he done so, we would now live in a world of candyfloss and small puppies.

westminster18's avatar

He allowed it then cause he thought it would all be over soon.

Archie1954's avatar

That was then, this is now.

Tim's avatar

"Will try not to allow" would be better.

Luka is, as are most politicians, a pragmatist; so he will allow it if it serves BR's interests - and his basic calculus revolves around his Union State relationship with Russia; which is of the same kind once advocated by the Three Musketeers, ie one for all, and all for one.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Think instead. Why hasnt any offensive been launched from Belarus since feb 2022? Its because Lika said no to Putin for further attacks.

So dear Vladimir cant force his way into Belarus but an Ukrainian attack on them will change the calculus. Of course Luka will allow Russian once a real War is started. If Ukrine only stages minor attacks - Belarus will handle them themselves.

Abe's avatar

Again with your pro-western buffoonery. Falling for the western PR as usual. Russia is cauldroning away the Donbass but you only focus on the desperate bandertie media victories. About 95% of those long range strikes Ukraine uses are low payload and slow speed drones. Sure tthe NAFO collective may launch some storm shadows here and there but more than 80% of those and 95% of the drones get shut down by Russia.

Russia continues working. Work brothers.

Burn mothafucka.

Unabridged Mind's avatar

I would try bot-testing some of the pro-UKR accounts. (You can only do it on a Substack entry that has video(s) attached, like this one). What you have to do is ask them to describe a visual item within a video. A bot can quote video, because there is a transcription that a computer program can understand, but isn't "watching" the video since it's a computer program, so it can't describe any visual detail in a video.

I do this on YT all the time, and the "person" is almost never able to respond. I say "Hey tell me some of the items on that shelf at the video's 2 minute mark" and suddenly no further responses. I do it pretty regularly to people spouting "mainstream talking points" and it's very often outed as not a real person.

There are even well known regular bots like "A_Jeff" on Tim Pool's YT channels, an argue-bot that has been going for years. Easily outed with the visual detail test.

Scarlett's avatar

just a simple thought. Not that simple considering that the account directly quotes the Russian President "работайте братья" and the metaphysics of The Indo-European family of languages and the spaces it covers.

Tim's avatar

We had proof last time that Ukraine is doing much of what it does for optical and propaganda purposes - eg the drones filled with black-smoke generating material, with which the Russian skies are daubed.

The political leadership.

The military wanted to go in back in 2014, to go in properly in 2022, to mobilize immediately and fully after the initial failure, and to organize a serious offensive after that.

All vetoed by the Kremlin and the oligarchs

Rodin's avatar

Not entirely sure of the logic here. In 2022 the Ukrainian military was at it's largest and best equipped. No? I would guess more than back in 2022, that kind of escalation (hitting Belarus) was just off the table, unlike now.

GM's avatar

In April 2022 the Ukrainian military had some old Soviet Tochka-U TBMs with 180 km range. And that's it. It had no way to strike meaningfully beyond its borders.

Today it has huge quantities of heavy long-range strike drones and now a lot of heavy cruise missiles too.

If they can sent 500 drone to Moscow in a day, or 200 to Leningrad, what do you think would happen to Belarus if Belarus got involved directly?

Rodin's avatar

I think the Ukrainians would get right old pasting if they did any of that. Opening up another (big) front when they're barely hanging on to the rest would be idiotic. At least in my opinion. But they are nihilists, so it's not beyond them…

GM's avatar

Just like they got it for Kursk?

Rodin's avatar

That was just a cope by Zelensky and co. Their losses for that side show were wildly out of proportion to the gains (PR gains only - look at the situation now, more than just a reversal).

Honestly, if the Ukrainians hit Belarus and they don't take the bait, then there will be no more provocation steps left…after that, I fear what might happen

I dont understand why Simplicius ask us to be not too sceptical about Zelenskys ”revelations” about Belorussias preparing for eventual War with Ukraine. Is it even preparation off War to build bridges and interchanges? And one lousy ammo depot? Not at all. Perfectly legal and non-aggressive.

”It all has the feel of something rehearsed, like Zelensky is going through a kind of multi-phase operational script.” You bet. Ukraine wants to spread the War at all cost. They have identified both Putin and Lukachenko as ”risk averse”. Why not press them with something more?

There is no need to believe Lukas sincere decisiveness to avoid War with their brothers in the south. And he has done as much possibible to stay out of it since feb 2022. The staging of the northern prong inside Belorussia was a concession to Putin (who after all saved him during the crisis 2020-2021).

There is no reports of large Russians formations inside Belorussia but Zelenskys threats are

orchestrated to force Russia to act and divert troops into Belorussia. Then they can say, as was the case 2022, looks who is preparing attacks.

The smokestack in Kiev was less impressing than the fact that the Moscow refinery is shut down for 6 months repair, which Simplicius do not report.

What have I told you?

West&Ukraine will escalate the ”pressure” on Russia until it snaps by mere creating chaos inside Russia and by threatening to close Baltic Sea. After all, they are free to bomb, sabotage and kill key persons inside Russia. Every red line has been trespassed. Why not create havoc in Belorussia then?

” In war, you either seize the initiative or give it up. The third is not given, " emphasized Syrsky.

Its a remarkable feat that Ukraine is standing up after 5 years and 2,4 million KiA.

Alyosha's avatar

Syrsky aka The Butcher aka Mr Cauldron is not very good reference. He transitioned now to Skala suicide squad "one-and-dones". Banzai "Buy-some-PR-time" slaughter "seizing" the initiative.

Plenty of people calling him The Best Russian Commander in Ukraine.

Alyosha's avatar

Alyosha's avatar

Ukrainians themselves call him Butcher, but hey he manages crises well. Bezuglaya is calling for him to be put in prison again.

RdA's avatar

Decimating is to remove 10%. Pick your terms more wisely.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Decimating:

transitive verb

To destroy or kill a large part of (a group of people or organisms).

To inflict great destruction or damage on.

"The storm decimated the region."

To reduce markedly in amount.

"a profligate heir who decimated his trust fund."

Originally from the Romans who killed 1/10 of the soldiers when the lost a battle. But we live in 2026.

Archie1954's avatar

Nonsense and not fitting with the facts.

Victor's avatar

It's not remarkable at all. It is a symptom of attrition warfare and constant feeds of weapons and ammo from western 'allies', draining Ukraine of military strength and Europe of weaponry and ammo. The EU's drone budget has even been cut significantly. The idea that drones are going to save the day for Ukraine is preposterous. Though drones will have a significant impact, they will not in any way possible win the war for the nazis in Kiev and the EU.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

”It is a symptom of attrition warfare”

Yeah?

werner hillinger's avatar

I can agree with most of what you are writing, but Ukraine is still standing as a result of the drone war. History shows a lot of examples where winning a war, conquering territory and/or depleting an enemy's resources could last for a lot of years (the Hundred Years War is the best example). Maybe tomorrow some new technical solutions are presented and everything gains speed, but maybe not.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

In the Hundred years War, UK was untouched (as they are now). All fighting on others ground.

werner hillinger's avatar

Sorry, but history tells us something else. There are many events, bringing the war to England (the UK was not formed at this time). Not at least as Scotland was on the French side. One early event was at Dupplin Moor; which does not sound very French. And a direct result of the lost war was the War Of The Roses. England got its beating.

bemused's avatar

Back then what was required for war were soldiers (self-renewing resource as long as the population isn't exterminated) and weapons that could be made by any blacksmith. Yes, you can keep a conflict like that going for a very long time, especially if there are relatively peaceful times within it. Modern weaponry is far more complex to build and there are just so many places capable of doing so limiting output -- and thus attrition can happen much faster.

Archie1954's avatar

You are conveniently forgetting that Russia is not pulling out all stops. If a war can be humane then that is what Russia is carrying out. If Ukraine were to actually cause widespread death and damage to Russia, Ukraine would be totally leveled, never to rise again!

Denis's avatar

Remember the original "Lost in Space," the robot who warned, "Danger, danger, Will Robinson"?

Well, that's how I feel about the current unfoldings of the Russian SMO.

Recent events have led me to downgrade Russia's win rate from 60% down to 50%.

That means as of now, neither Russia nor Ukraine is winning this conflict.

After almost 5 years of fighting, Ukraine has managed a 50-50 draw.

Here is why.

Russia managed to recover after its poorly planned SMO resulted in a forced hasty retreat as a result of not attacking in full force needed to neutralize Ukraine. The only good thing about the SMO was that it gained ground along its Western front. Yet even though Russia continues to make minor advances, Ukraine, backed by Western nations, still has enough manpower to hold its lines, having made tremendous progress in the scale and technology of manufacturing cheap drones, which are starting to overwhelm Russian defences.

Russian oligarchs, more loyal to money than country and eager to resume business with the West, greatly underestimated the combined force of a West-backed Ukraine. The Kremlin's epic failure to take the measures needed to neutralize Ukraine from the start has created a bad situation. If you think things are going well in Russia, think again.

I will explain.

Russia faces serious headwinds.

The Russian stock market is down 50% from its previous high in 2022.

Russian reserves are down to a minimum from lofty levels.

Dr. Livci writes:

The current status quo of NATO having free reign to strike at will inside Russia from behind a Ukrainian scarecrow while Russia targets sheds and solar panels in Ukraine is not sustainable and Russia doesn’t have the means to take even Donbass anytime in the next year much less Kharkov and Odessa. The Kremlins die hard, messianic restraint and refusal to respond when it’s redlines are crossed have finally allowed NATO to bring the war home to regular Russians who don’t have any relatives or friends who have been directly impacted by the fighting. There are now gas shortages all over the country due to Ukrainian strikes on refineries and this is being compounded by Russian Suppliers passing on the cost of the deficits to consumers.

Moscow's main oil refinery, ~30–35% of the capital's fuel supply, is expected to be offline into 2027 after Ukrainian drone strikes, with US intelligence reportedly supporting the targeting.

Russian oil continues to flow through Ukraine to NATO States while rationing oil is implemented in parts of Russia. Are you bloody well kidding me? Is this the kind of cuck state Russia has become? It reminds me of Chamberlain appeasing Hitler. The Russian oligarchs are cucking to the West because that's where their interests are, and they can't fully separate from the West, so they go in with half-measures like the half-assed SMO. Red lines mean nothing. The population is getting restless with all this bull they're fed by the Kremlin, which they can't openly complain about or face jail. Russia is in a shitshow internally. The oligarchs are stuck, and it's unlikely to get any better unless real change occurs within Russia's political system which I hear clearly cracking at the seams..

Victor's avatar

Denis, you are clearly reaching far beyond your historically assumed potential for the negative. Well done!

Denis's avatar

I really wish it wasn't so, Victor. I've done the research.

Truth can be a bitter pill to swallow.

I care about the lives of Russian soldiers and their families and humanity, and I'll say what needs to be said about the oligarchs using Russian lives as bargaining chips in their haste to resume business with the West because they value money more than the nation. It's really that simple.

Victor's avatar

I will grant you that the oligarchs (and others in Russia) are pushing to make nice with the West and that they naturally, due to their wealth, make for serious opposition to the war in its present form. And as civilian dissatisfaction grows over the conduct of the war, they will take advantage of the opportunity to create schisms in society. However, I also believe that the overwhelming majority of Russians continue to support the war and are cognisant of its existential implications to their country - the military, especially, who will continue to focus on their strategy to meet the objectives of their Commander-in-Chief, Putin. Whilst we might disagree as to Putin and his generals' methods, still those objective will remain and will be met - nothing will deviate Russia from winning this war. The oligarch's certainly have power, but not near the power they used to have before Putin - if they did have that power, Russia would look very different today than it currently does.

Denis's avatar

That is quite reasonable of you, Victor.

I'll leave it at that.

Feral Finster's avatar

Nobody is stopping you.

Victor's avatar

Well, I have to admit I don't prefer cynical horseshit. Perhaps those who engage in mostly cynical comments or negative comments think themselves intelligent or witty - but I don't think they realise that's not usually how they are perceived.

Feral Finster's avatar

The only question you should ask is: does this accurately describe observable reality?

That's it., Whether cynical or marysue should never come into it.

Victor's avatar

You are correct. And offering constructive criticism in response rather than a snide response is likely just as preferable.

Feral Finster's avatar

You may have noticed that many people here argue by means of stupid insult. I have been called every name under the sun, I have been accused of everything that it is possible to accuse a tomcat of, except perhaps vegetarianism.

You may notice that I never respond in kind. Argument by snark or by stupid insult is a sure sign that someone has no argument.

Zelensky attacking Belarus would be a good thing.

There are two outcomes here:

1) If the Kremlin does not fight back even in that case, then everything was already truly and completely lost and this wiwl just accelerate the collapse, with a faint hope for a desperate coup attempt from the military suceeding. Very faint though -- they would have to be absolutely ruthless in implementing it, i.e. Putin has to be killed and buried in an unmarked grave, and the same should happen to all the oligarchs and practically all of the administration, plus much of the business and political elite. We're talking many thousands of people who have to killed very quickly and without any hesitation in order to neutralize the threat of civil war stoked by the western masters of those people. Does the Russian military have what it takes to not repeat the mistakes of August 1991? Doubtful given that nobody ever had the balls to disobey orders and just take out Zelensky when he took yet another selfie five kilometers from the nearest Russian lines, thus forcing the Kremlin's hand.

2) Lukashenko follows up on proving to be a real man back in 2020 (when instead of fleeing as the coward Yanukovich he came out in the center of Minsk with an AK and the overthrow attempt failed) and fulfils his promise given yesterday that the nature of the war will change. Belarus doesn't have the conventional firepower to fight a protracted war with Ukraine, but it does have what is needed to eleiminate the Kiev junta.

And then it will also finally be open season on Western arms supplies entering Ukraine from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania west of Moldova. Something the Kremlin has refused to do anything about for five years now.

We hope for the second outcome, obviously.

The worry is that the people behind Zelensky are both decisive in their actions and absolute cowards who don't like to play fair, so if they are taking some bold action that usually means that the outcome has already been decided and this is just the finishing move.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Any attack on Belorussia would be a bad thing. More people will die, more infrastucture and housing destroyed, more chaos and probability of all out (real) War.

Luka is a brave man but also wise - he dont fight, provoke or make himself a target.

He wants peace and have told his puppy-buddy, Putin, that he stays out of the conflict.

But if Ukraine does some stunt where they both try to kill him and destroys bridges and ammo dumps, then things will change. Luka cant launch nukes by himself but there will be no limits for the Russian to enter his land. What they do of it is another question.

If Syrskys says that Russia is raising/preparing divisions/brigades for a Northern theater is something else than preparing an attack.

I look forward to the promised 40-day operation from SBU.

What more can they do to ridicule the Russians?

Victor's avatar

You look forward to the 40 day operation from the SBU. That says a lot about you, Mikey.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

No, I dont want anyone to die anymore. I look forward to see what another stunt they can do to ridicule the Russians in front of the public. I know they seek provocation and escalation. Bullies do. Its in their nature.

What is appaling, is the indifference in Kremlin, to the suffering among the soldiers and civilians. Its not me who cherish the long game, the 5-D attrition game, the thousand cuts resulting in 1 milliond dead Russians and 2 million+ Ukrainians. Wishing for a long War or endless SMO is not ethical.

Victor's avatar

One million dead Russians? Where on earth did you get that number - from Kiev? More like 200,000-250,000.

No one wishes for a long war (except the West, of course), or an endless SMO. That is not what attrition is about. It is about draining the other side of their capability of continuing the war. The drones will be dealt with eventually - Russia will adapt as they usually do. It is the West that is not prepared for this kind of war and it plainly shows in their increasingly failed efforts to properly support their proxy.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

If Simplicius can use the numbers 2,4 millions for the Uki side, I can use RItters of 1 million.

250 000 is in itself an abnormal figure, 5 times more than losses in Afghanistan. And nothing achieved.

Kennewick Man's avatar

‘And nothing achieved.’

I respectfully disagree.

Victor's avatar

250,000 against the best army in Europe - better I would suggest than American ground forces - over a 5 year period against huge losses on the part of such an enemy in a war of attrition is not so bad, esp as they are the attacking force (attacking forces will usually sustain more losses than the defenders which is why a 3:1 ratio is recommended for the attack.

As for nothing achieved, that is absurd - four new regions added to Russia (so far), millions freed from bloodthirsty genocidal nazis, a NATO depleted of weapons and ammo that will take years to replace, a demonstration of the inadequacy of American weaponry to deal with Russian weaponry, A deteriorating Europe (militarily, economically, and socially), a increasingly fractured NATO, a successful import substitution programme (incl significant new industries such as their civilian commercial plane production), increased and strengthened ties with China and Iran along with the Global South, an economy far more healthy than Europe (maintaining growth, increased rankings among nations based on PPP GDP, and a far better organised and experienced armed forces and military industrial base with immense stores of weaponry and ammo that is well-prepared for the coming European war. Nothing achieved....sure.

Alyosha's avatar

Chip Worley's avatar

I would truly like to see that, Chip, esp since Putin has announced that if Europe wants a war with Russia, Russia is ready. So now they are ready, give it to them.

Gnuneo's avatar

In a way it is good that Russia is being attacked - it brings home to Russians that they really ARE in a war with the West, just as their grandparents were.

More than that, just like the last time, it is lead by overt Nazis, deliberately targets civilians, is protecting a genocidal force (In Palestine), is absolutely dishonest, and utterly amoral.

Of course the population would prefer NOT to be bombed. And they are likely partly angry at the Kremlin for not preventing the attacks.

But Russians are not fools. More of them are probably aware of the various genocidal statements regarding Russia from Western officials than Westerners are. They will also know their POWs were tortured and brutally murdered, for "pleasure"; the treatment of the civilians of Kursk, and where all these drones and ISR are coming from.

They now know they are at war with NATO - not because the Kremlin propaganda said so, but because they can see it with their own eyes.

While Western populations sleepwalk.

Like nothing else could have, this will have opened Russian eyes to what is almost certainly coming.

Victor's avatar

As an example of the cruelty of the Western-supported nazis character, it is reported in Russian news yesterday (on television) that as the nazis were leaving what remained of their occupation in Konstantinovka, they gathered several families up, forced them into a church and set it afire, burning all of them alive. They also did the same to several families in their homes.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

But Russia always fail to spread the info&evidence to the westerners. Why?

thatguy's avatar

Probably because they don't have the massive media infrastructure in the West to do so. And, much of the Russia-friendly media that does exist is banned in the West. They can't simply wish that infrastructure into existence, and they can't force Western govts to change their censorship laws.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Indeed. But Russia is always accused of asymetric and information War. They are accused of filling up X & social media with bots/provocateurs.

Why not get out with the information on every channel there is. Every day, every hour?

Les's avatar

Perhaps that means that it's not the Russians "filling up X & social media with bots/provocateurs" after all?

Victor's avatar

Perhaps because Russia sees no point in lowering themselves to the level of their zionist enemies? The West will continue their propaganda. Russia will continue advancing on their enemy.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

2.4 MILLION is 15% of the entire population, and nearly all males over 20, which means no future generations to come.

grr's avatar

Dhdh's avatar

oh boy, the burning church propaganda again. The jew is is the problem. always has been.

Feral Finster's avatar

Yes, Ukrainians do that.

What does Russia propose to do about it? They aren't just going to stop.

Victor's avatar

Neither is Russia. Ukraine is falling kilometre by kilometre, day after day.

Feral Finster's avatar

We've been hearing that one for years now, the war could be over as soon as 2353! That isn't even the case in the Zaporozhian front, but we won't mention that.

Meanwhile, NATO strikes deeper and deeper into Ru9ssia and seizes Russian ships, all with total impunity.

Victor's avatar

I understand your reasoning but perhaps you haven't considered that we are talking about a massive thousand km front line here, a front that NATO and Ukraine heavily fortified with almost impenetrable fortifications for some 8 years all the while training and arming a 600,000 man army in preparation for this. Russia, too, thought they might be able to get this over quickly, but they were wrong and not nearly as well prepared as Ukraine for what was to come. But they adapted, reorganised, built up their forces, restarted their military industrial base - all that takes time - and in the meantime, they still not only held Ukraine back from retaking Donbass with fewer soldiers than Ukraine, but managed to make their way through these fortifications inch by inch whilst growing their army and adapting to a new form of warfare. It all seems too little for 5 years effort, but if you look at the number of strategic towns and cities they have taken over that period, you begin to see the progress. Once Kramatorsk and Slovyansky are taken, that will pretty much be Donbass fully taken. Those fortified lines of resistance become far less of an obstacle after that. Meanwhile a 2.4 million army has been obliterated.

Feral Finster's avatar

Excuses excuses. Coulda shoulda woulda.

Failed.

Ukraine spent eight years preparing for a war that anyone could see coming. Russia dithered and continues to dither, after a series of miscalculations that continue to the present.

And *if* Russia takes Slaviansk and Kramatorsk, that doesn't mean that Ukraine or NAYO will just go home, the war in over.

Hans Kloss's avatar

Traditional way - they did it to 100.000 Polish peasants during WW2 for no good reason really. They killed their own too back then if they suspected them of helping their Polish neighbours. That is what makes me so pessimistic about this all - Polish state supporting the vermin that killed their own.

Victor's avatar

I'll never understand that as well - what is going on with Polish leadership?

Barry McEntyre's avatar

5th column, bribes, blackmail and cuckolded population.

The Spectre's avatar

Hundreds thousand Poles were resettled to East Galicia from the other Polish territories by the government after the 1st WW has finished. Those were mostly veterans of war and their purpose was to stabilise situation on the eastern border areas. There were send to Volynia to control Ukrainian nationalism.

And the state policy was tight control through repressions, including use of military.

That's why those re-settlers were targeted by Ukrainian nationalists, who were local indigenous population.

That massacre happen only 2 years after Germany conquered that area, so it wasn't spontaneous but organised, including systematic help from Germans. That way Germans were clearing out their Eastern flank.

Now, Poles were told by the American ambassadors and NATO to follow Rusophobic policies and send their older armaments to Ukraine, and promised upgraded production from the West. That didn't happen, Poland has disarmed itself.

The plan is to unite failed Ukrainian rump state with Poland, after civil war in Ukraine. Banderites will resettle and take over half of Poland, with autonomous rights for self-governing. Is south-east of Poland they will be the majority, as Poles will be forcibly relocated near to German border and Baltic, the old East and West Prussia.

South of Poland will taken by Israelites, with Cracov as their autonomous centre.

Poland will be practically partitioned.

Slovakia will be taken over in whole by Banderites and Jews escaping from Palestine. Will cease exist as an independent state.

>In a way it is good that Russia is being attacked - it brings home to Russians that they really >ARE in a war with the West, just as their grandparents were.

Well, the Russians of today are not the same Russians. Today, the Russians are just like others - simple consumers. They just dream American dream, they like expensive cars, they watch Netflix.

They won't fight. They love Europe more then Russia.

Stjopa's avatar

Are you Russian? Do you live in Russia? Do you know enough Russians to be able to summarize their thoughts and opinions? I think the answer is "no" three times over.

Alyosha's avatar

Of course he is not, Stjopa. Only Russians he "interacts" with are those who moved to Serbia, where he is from.

Do you think it bothers him that he is projecting some fluff-masquerading-as-a-profound-psychology on entire world? Crap like "American dream", "Lidl", "Ice cream somewhere", "Inferiority complex", you name some other crap.

Tired of life old projecting fart.

Cotra's avatar

There are enough Russians in Serbia that I can draw conclusions.

Besides I read posts from John Helmer who lives in Russia.

Those two sources of information perfectly fit.

Before meeting Russians who came to live in Serbia I had much much nicer opinion about Russians. But now I can see what kind of people are those who are supposed to be an elite. There are of course poor people coming, who want to avoid draft. They are so desperate. Recently I talked to somebody who came here with only 2000EUR and no job here. Such people become an easy prey of the greedy Serbian house owners. There are two kinds of Russians here: the arrogant and educated rich elite who already started to play dirty games on the market with local criminals here (Yandex), and those poor people who are a minority.

There is also another thing. The Russian government is involved with teh corrupted Serbian government. The Russian ambassador Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko is bribed by Vucic, and frequently endorses him. The same Vucic who makes money on killing Russians in Ukraine by selling ammunition. Serbia today is a criminal country with dirty politics. And Putin and his gang and oligarchs do some trade via Serbia and they are happy with Serbian criminals.

So, I have many reasons to draw conclusions about Russia and Russians.

The current Russian government is a government of oligarchs. Look what happened in Iran, IRGC took the power and they managed to achieve something.

When will Russian army finally took the power in Russia?

The Russian g9overnment serves only Putin's oligarchs.

Alyosha's avatar

John Helmer no longer lives in Russia...

"John Helmer's visa application was rejected in September 2010 primarily due to his aggressive reporting on the aluminum giant RusAl and its owner, Oleg Deripaska.

According to Helmer, the ban was retaliation orchestrated by RusAl after he:

>>> Refused a bribe to write favorable articles or remain silent about the company ahead of its 2010 IPO in Hong Kong.

>>> Published negative reports regarding RusAl's financial debts and controversial business deals.

While the Russian Foreign Ministry officially stated only that he had "violated the rules for foreign correspondents" without citing specific evidence, a migration official later told Helmer's Russian wife that the ban was imposed because her husband "writes bad about our country."

Helmer described the expulsion as the first instance of a journalist being removed from Russia at the demand of a private company."

"American dream", "Lidl", "Ice cream in Tosacana" are important symbols for millions of consumers.

At work I am frequently busy with automatic logo recognition. All this stuff on TV, during sport events. It is not there for nothing it influences humans, it is all measured. Most of the population is under control. You would be scared to know how terribly good that all works. More money is spent on sport sponsorships then on hospitals.

There was never time before when TPTB had such power over their population.

Gnuneo's avatar

Well, of course. But it's not "europe" they love, it's a peaceful life. And there's nothing wrong with that desire, it's what all sane societies should genuinely strive for.

“Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America nor, for that matter, in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. ... [V]oice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

Cotra's avatar

You are right. But Putin's government made no steps to prepare the population for the war.

Gnuneo's avatar

Well, recall that at the time, the Kremlin was doing everything it could not to alert the NATO countries that it really was preparing an SMO. Flooding the Russian airwaves would have been a big red flag for the NATO countries to prepare themselves.

Barry McEntyre's avatar

And all they got for it was the Spirit of Istambul and "goodwill" withdrawal. Wouldn't believe it if someone told me.

Gnuneo's avatar

Tbf, it SHOULD have worked. The only fly was that Zelensky REALLY loves his pharma grade coke, and he was susceptible as a sociopath to the psychopath's BloJo's charms and blandishments, such as "We'll make you globally admired and an edgy reb leader, heck we'll even call you "Churchill 2.0", and deplatform anyone who doubts, How about it?".

Anyone with even a flicker of true National spirit would have accepted the offered Russian deal immediately.

With 2.4 million Ukrainians now dead, and god alone knows how many permanently injured, the country he supposedly leads simply won't exist in a few years.

I don't think the Kremlin could have believed it either.

Feral Finster's avatar

"But it's not "europe" they love, it's a peaceful life. And there's nothing wrong with that desire, it's what all sane societies should genuinely strive for."

Complete western delusional propaganda nonsense about the WW2 "nazis," by the way.

Firstly, they weren't "nazis," ( who actually are jews - it's a jewish philosophy - see "Gaza" for details ) they were "National Socialists," and I guarantee you have never read the NS Manifesto, whose simple common sense and logic caused my heart to sing for joy when I actually DID read it.

Secondly, no "deliberate targeting of civilians" ever occurred - Wehrmacht and SS troops were under STRICT INSTRUCTIONS to do all that was humanly possible to avoid in any way antagonizing the native population - who frequently openly colluded with them as they passed through, such was their total disillusion with the Stalinesque policies of that time.

Contrasting with that extreme restraint, of course, was Stalin's requirement that all local infrastructure anywhere near German forces was to be destroyed - and not a few civilians murdered in passing, as that, he thought, would unite the local people against the invader - who in any case, was only invading a few months before Stalin's own plan to invade Europe on the back of exhausted German and Allied forces, who he thought would at that point be unable to resist.

See John Wear's epochal work "Germany's War" for all the details of what actually was going on in those times - which of course you are entirely ignorant of.

The entire modern-day Kremin narrative - imposed ruthlessly on all - is a complete pack of lies, where it concerns what they describe as a great patriotic war - this was a fight for survival by a brutal and genocidal dictatorship.

All true, of course.

For the Russians, it suits their self-image to frame WW2 as a great patriotic war.

To tell the truth about it would leave them without the mythologizing of the nation that they like to do.

Once they admit the truth about what they were then, ie atheistic communists dedicated to extinguishing the light of Christ in the world; and contrast it with what they are now, then history can move forwards once again.

"Nazis" will be seen as what they are, ie jews; and National Socialists will be seen as what they were; ie the only fighters against jewish decadence and depravity, as expressed in the "values" you mentioned.

Jon Elmer, contributing editor, reports on how Hizballah’s armed FPV drones and anti-tank missiles shaped the battle in South Lebanon before the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding paused the fight earlier this week; and a breakdown

Yet the Kremlin still play along and respect the Americans who start all conflicts, as the mediating peace negotiators!

Gnuneo's avatar

Key words: "play along".

They believe this is the mission of their generation:

"But Russians are not fools. More of them are probably aware of the various genocidal statements regarding Russia from Western officials than Westerners are. They will also know their POWs were tortured and brutally murdered, for "pleasure"; the treatment of the civilians of Kursk, and where all these drones and ISR are coming from."

So what is Russia doing about it?

Another major attack today on Russia.

Barry McEntyre's avatar

I'm just thinking that they simply can't do much. It can't be that Putin just sits there and exercises "patience." He simply has no cards.

thatguy's avatar

Nukes are cards. Best not to play those too early.

Feral Finster's avatar

There's some truth to that, since nobody fears Russia anymore.

The reason for the western panic for a cease fire right now is because it knows it cannot keep Ukraine going over the winter which would mean at the very least, massive tides of refugees. Ukraine or at any rate Z and co, know this too. The western europeans have made sure of that.

The other reason western europe really, really does not want to give up on Ukraine is its desperation for eastern Ukrainian and even Russian resources to survive in the medium term and underwrite an additional huge amount debt that has financed this war one way or another, through one outfit or another and is currently floating in the ether but about to make a descent.

Made up money can only go so far, and that confidence trick is losing its own momentum. The US has huge real resources to back its own debt although nowhere near enough to maintain the current value of that debt. Inflation will make the required adjustment if no positive political action is taken. Trump has been warned of this.

Maximilian Paulsen's avatar

Grasping at straws.

Zelensky is now getting his way with Belarus. Why? Because he can. Because his threats have a credibility they did not in earlier phases of the war. Twisting that into evidence that the war is going in Russia's favour is a twist only a propagandist would make.

If russian soldiers crawling around Sumy's forests were a real threat to the city, it would have fallen years ago.

This is a war of attrition. You win it if you have the capacity to absorb more blows than your foe. Russia destroying random gas stations across Ukraine is not going to affect arms availability nor the strategic drone campaign nor the logistics interdiction campaign. In fact, it demonstrates russia's inability to hit more interesting targets. It's a stretch to say the least that this is evidence of the war going Russia's way

Alyosha's avatar

Destroying fuel supply nodes cannot interdict logistics?

No air campain ever achieved anything substantial, except horror and pain for the civilians.

But past air campaigns could not hit a pin with a drone from 1,200 miles.

Blissex's avatar

Yugoslavia? Libya?

werner hillinger's avatar

Yugoslavia, where NATO showed us all this videos of "precision strikes" hitting tanks, AA or artillery? And after the war, we found out, that close to nothing was destroyed. But I was talking about air campains, not close combat support, that could be very helpful.

jade's avatar

"But you decide what you want to believe," we are told near the end of this piece.

Well, I believe this "war" has gone on far too long.

I wonder why thousands of intelligence workers from NATO are planning drone strikes killing hundreds of schoolchildren and civilians without any attempt to strike and remove them.

I wonder why Putin has allowed dozens of assassinations, including attempts on his own life, without appropriate retaliation.

I wonder why Ukraine has any electricity, any trains running, etc.

I wonder why Putin alone should fear escalation by protecting his country and its people.

I wonder why Putin sits on the most powerful weapons, afraid to use them while all of this is happening.

And I am sure everyone has their opinion on why these things are happening.

Lastly, here's an opinion to think about.

Scott Ritter, who I admit blows with the theatrical winds, is now telling anyone who listens that true losses of Russian fighters, including military, exceed one million men. while Russia holds only a 2-1 advantage in KIA.

Opinions might change the narrative, but they don't change reality.

Mark Watson's avatar

At the top of the escalation ladder we all die. Nuclear war has never been fought and its the reason . Ukraine is a massive country and hitting everything military is almost impossible . When you have the entire "west" fighting on the other side , winning a war isn't easy . This is WW3 and the Iranian front was the beginning of the end . As Simplicius has stated the cracks in the wall are widening and increasing and the collapse of the wall is coming. The Russians lost 27 million in WW2 and are not going to make the same mistake again.

Kennewick Man's avatar

I also hope it will not come to that point but Russia is not in control of this conflict.

Mark Watson's avatar

Kennewick Man,

If not Russia then who ? From a logistics angle Russia is winning , albeit with assistance , but the entire west is running short of resources .

Kennewick Man's avatar

Presently, I do not see a clear path for Russia to finish this war with a victory that would restrain Ukraine from allowing in US/NATO troops.

Elena Newton's avatar

There is one path, but Russia isn't on it: the destruction and elimination of Ukraine.

joseph doyle's avatar

what was the mistake the Soviets made in WW2?

Mark Watson's avatar

Wasting men . They took objectives with little regard for casualties . Russia IMO is not taking unnecessary risks with the lives of their military . If you look at the losses Ukraine took in its "offensives" the Russians are doing much better .

joseph doyle's avatar

Ok fair enough. Though the Soviets lacked the weapons they needed early on, but had plenty of men so it makes sense. You go to war with the army you have, as they say.

Charles T Maguire's avatar

Please tell me why Russia has not taken out Z and his leadership? If Russia took out top and second tier of Ukrainian leadership this house of cards would fall.

There is reason Putin will not do it. None of us know why, but I suspect if we did it would show Putin's and his supporters links to West.

Also, Iran held off two nuclear powers and in 4 months arguably got the better of them. And no one used nukes. Nuclear threat is boogeyman Putin uses to avoid upsetting the West.

bemused's avatar

Its called the Strait of Hormuz. If Iran were located elsewhere (or if the Strait were not a chokepoint for shipping) they would not have the leverage they used.

Charles T Maguire's avatar

Agreed, Iran's nuclear option was the Strait..and they used it. Russia's nuclear option is literally "nuclear" and West knows they will never go first so this give West carte blanche to keep accelerating and prolonging while Putin fumbles around and Lavrov keeps complaing to deaf UN.

But Russia does have other formidable non-nuclear options but, unlike Iran, is to weak knee'd to use.

You can't sugar coat it, Putin is protecting something or some group more important to him than Russian people and State. Just like Trump is putting Israel over U.S. for reasons only he and Israel know.

bemused's avatar

The fact that you believe that about Putin does not make it true. We all only have partial information, and much of that may be false. The story of the blind men and the elephant comes to mind. Nobody who matter cares about the opinions expressed on this (or any other) blog. I find it rather amusing at the passionate commenters here who actually seem to think they make a difference. Best advice is to sit back and watch the show.

Mark Watson's avatar

Bemused,

You are correct. If the Russian oil hadn't been "sanctioned" the restriction of Middle east oil would have been less effective . There are other routes for some shipping , but the Strait of Hormuz is the primary route for a lot of vital resources . The middle east has cheap energy which allows them to produce products that are energy intensive.

Scarlett's avatar

so you want a nuke pronto landed on your newton family tree. what are your digits?

Kennewick Man's avatar

Elena: "Well, I believe this "war" has gone on far too long.

I am kind of starting to feel your pain there, this conflict is already longer than the Soviet – German war was from 1941 to 1945 and I do not see the end in sight. Read my longer post I just placed like 15 minutes ago where I drive to the inner core of this issue.

Elena Newton's avatar

I was quoting Jade, but of course I agree. I think Russia is losing, will lose, and will end up signing an agreement that fails to accomplish any of the SMO's objectives. People here will cheer Putin's wisdom and compassion. They'll do it when Russia is subsequently partitioned, too.

Mark Watson's avatar

Kennewick Man,

The nature and methods of war have radically changed . In WW1 you had mechanised trench warfare in which there were massive casualties for little gain (similar to the Ukraine offensives). IMO the war was ended when logistics were exhausted (attrition) . Ukraine is (as you pointed out) unable to continue without the assistance of NATO even when it isn't a member . The USA and Europe have exhausted their stockpiles of weapons and ammunition and will struggle to supply enough to keep it going forward . The corruption of the MIC in the west and on top of that the political corruption is a poison pill.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Those numbers, meaning 3 million dead, is enough evidence of what failure this SMO has been and what War brings about. Death&destruction and nothing good at all.

Those advocating, applauding the ”war of attrition” must be deranged.

In a fight, you go fast, you kill the gangleader. End of it.

Mark Watson's avatar

Mikey,

How did that go for the USA against Iran ? Iran won a war of attrition against them .

Charles T Maguire's avatar

It went according to US/Israel's plan....they all died. However, the US and Israel severely misjudged the depth and degree of Irans military and political institutions.

Ukraine is not Iran....Iran population was willing to go down with the ship. Death in war means martyrdom, something we in west cannot understand, but they embrace. Ukraine needs to drag people off the street. No one want to fight on front line. They have to bring in tons of Columbians and Mexicans for that.

Ukraine is as corrupt as could be, Iran is not.

In 4 years Russia's enemies are getting emboldened, in 4 months Irans middle eastern enemies, who are US/Israel satellites in all reality, are negotiating treaties so they do not get attacked.

Mikey Johnson's avatar

Because it never went into a attrition War. US walked away (for now).

Feral Finster's avatar

Were it not for the Straits of Hormuz, the US would keep right no killing Iranians and bombing everything that moves, wither or not of any military significance.

TJ Eastwood's avatar

nope. the JUSA was out of munitions. I've already been over this.

all of its tactical aircraft capabilities were neutered. It only had standoff weapons at its disposal and it shot all of them trying to hamper Iran's ballistics capability; it failed. When the ceasefire was over and the Strait was closed, the JUSA recognized that it didn't have anywhere near enough weapons to prosecute a victory and basing land forces anywhere close enough to invade would have gotten them slaughtered.

No win scenario there.

Feral Finster's avatar

They were flying over Iran more or less at will. and had plenty of dumb bombs

Will Catchum's avatar

No they were not, you're delusional. Just stick to what you are good at, licking your ass.

TJ Eastwood's avatar

no they weren't.

the aircraft operating over central or northern Iran were exclusively drones. And after the first week, those were shot down on the reg; Iran wiped out half the drone fleet.

US had some ability to operate aircraft in far western Iran as a concerted SEAD campaign was engaged there by the IDF.

At no point did strategic bombers overfly during this campaign; they used standoff weapons. Tactical aircraft also did not...how can we know this? RANGE.

werner hillinger's avatar

Look back into history. There were sooooo many wars that dragged on and on, because the military forces of that period were not able to quickly overcome the defenses. Even the usage of thousands of bombers in WWII could not stop the German railway or the movement of troops from East to West and back. I do not understand why people, again and again, think strategic air power can win wars? Both parties (in the SMO) deliver tiny fractions of the explosives delivered in WWII, North Korea or Vietnam.

bemused's avatar

Tonnage of explosives is not important -- most of those delivered in ww2 made nice craters in fields. Targeting is very much better now so the amount required is much smaller. Hitting critical nodes can cause disproportionate damage to military objectives.

E H's avatar

Scott is probably only a reference point for crackpots

Jeannie's avatar

Lushenko makes it clear that this is a proxy war with the West. At some point, Russia is going to have to hit them as well as hitting Ukraine every time Russia is attacked.

France just captured another "Shadow fleet" ship. Why is the West the only one who gets to make up rules about sanctions? It's just plain old fashioned piracy.

Russia should seize a French ship in return. It's easier than sending escorts with every tanker.

thatguy's avatar

I think that would be just reactive "tit-for-tat" retaliation, and although probably emotionally satisfying, it wouldn't be any help at all strategically.

Guido Vandeven's avatar

Let the French alone there’s a case of Ebola now and who knows they can stop it, besides their past is full of self eliminations the Pest (A. Camus) and now a heat wave nuclear reactions stopped, social life chaos, trains the rails are growing broader and last but not least hospitals without cooling systems, patients dying not of disease but of the heat so, leave the French to themselves they’re going downhill on their own.

grr's avatar

An alleged case of Ebola, reported by the usual historical liars.

Elena Newton's avatar

Deterrence is not about matching the other side's affronts; it's about imposing a cost that makes the other side decide not to do the thing. Russia should be sinking French war ships. Of course I can already hear everybody say that would invite nuclear holocaust because we all know if Russia, holder of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, takes steps to defend itself it will immediately be obliterated by the west, which is unable to set priorities and will respond to anything with nukes.
